New, from Biotics Research Corporation Recent research has demonstrated that both alpha and gamma tocopherols decreased arterial peroxidation and LDL oxidation, and also increased endogenous superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. However, alpha tocopherol was found to be less effective than gamma tocopherol. Additionally, gamma tocopherol is more effective in inhibiting the oxidation of phospholipids by peroxynitrite as well. Unlike a-tocopherol, -tocopherol and its primary metabolite 2,7,8-trimethyl-2(-carboxyethyl)-6-hydroxychroman (-CEHC) were shown to inhibit the synthesis of PGE2 via inhibition of COX-2. Subsequent research documented -tocopherols effects, showing a significant lowering of PGE2.
