Nutriclear by Biotics Research (Metabolic Clearing Formula)
New Pea Protein Isolate
NutriClear from Biotics Research is a hypoallergenic clearing formula designed to support healthy GI function and normal detoxification pathways. It provides nutritional support for metabolic clearing. Detoxification is a complex process that demands nutrients over and above what are needed for normal daily functioning. Detoxification is an active process that involves at least two steps:
1) Oxidation: In a process that generates free radicals, an molecule of reactive oxygen is added to the toxin that is being processed. The purpose of this first step is to make the toxin ready for the second stage of the detoxification process. If nutrient supply is insufficient, then the first oxidative step may not proceed efficiently or the free radical damage from the biochemical reactions may increase oxidative stress and lead to tissue damage.
2) Conjugation: The second phase of detoxification is the conjugation stage, wherein a molecule such as taurine, glycine, or glutathione is covalently bound to the toxin to increase its solubility in water.
After the conjugation step, the toxin is ready to be excreted in the bile or urine. If nutrients are not sufficiently available for this second step, then the oxidized toxin cannot be excreted efficiently and may cause secondary damage by interacting with body tissues and DNA.
The Pea Protein Isolate raw material that Biotics Research has selected is a non-GMO.
Making the protein source change to NutriClear also gave Biotics Research the opportunity to improve other aspects of the formula as well.
There have been some concerns regarding the use of cane sugar in our NutriClear formula. Bill Sparks and Dr. Rachel Olivier explain why the sugar is necessary and can still be used by those wanting to avoid sugar in their diets.
NutriClear is designed for the nutritional support of metabolic detox. We improved the source of protein, to non-GMO pea, that is gluten free, easy on the stomach, and easily absorbed. It has an essential amino acid profile very close to that of an ideal protein, as recommended by the World Health Organization. To improve the taste of the product we elected to add organic evaporated cane juice and stevia. This blend was found to taste better. The amount of sugar from organic cane juice is six grams per serving.
Patients that are on low sugar diets need to consider the total glycemic load of any meal that they consume. The Glycemic Load (GL) of a meal is measured by the glucose equivalents in grams per meal. Although NutriClear is not a meal, it is best to understand the GL in terms of physiological response for the patient. Sugar molecules contain one part glucose and one part fructose. The Glycemic Index (GI), the amount of glucose that increases in the body after consuming 100 grams of glucose, is equal to 100. Sugar has a GI of 65. The glycemic load of a food is determined by the total amount of carbohydrates multiplied by their GI divided by 100. A meal of 100 grams of glucose would = 100 x 100 / 100 = 100. The GL of NutriClear from cane sugar would = 6 x 65 / 100 = 3.9.
How does this value relate to recommended intakes for patients sensitive to the intake of sugar?
Foods are not required to list the Glycemic Index. Many diabetic educators recommend that low GI diets be considered as having a GI of 55 or less. A high (bad) GI would be 70 or greater. In terms of comparisons of foods, a sweet muffin has a GI of 46 as compared to an apple that has 7.9 (Am J Clin Nutr 2008;87, 237-43S). The GI of a serving of NutriClear is less than 4. Low glycemic diets are defined as those containing most carbohydrates from low GI sources such as beans, peas, and lentils. High GI diets contain potato, wheat meal, and white bread.
