This comprehensive formula can be used for cats in all phases of life. It provides a broad range of ingredients, in palatable form, to meet the needs of cats. With modern processed food and pollution of food, water, and the environment, it is difficult to know whether cats are receiving the essential supportive substances that can promote their optimal health. By supplying Feline Basics early in life, or before a cat becomes ill, its quality of life can be enhanced.
Trace minerals (zinc, copper, and iron) are supplied as highly absorbable picolinate chelates. Chromium is supplied as Thorne Vet's patented UltraChrome. Vitamins B2 and B6 are provided in the active forms – riboflavin 5'-phosphate and pyridoxyl 5'-phosphate – for cats with hepatic dysfunction who cannot properly convert the standard forms of these B vitamins. Feline Basics goes a step further, providing vitamin B12 and folate in their active, tissue-ready forms – methylcobalamin (B12) and folinic acid and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (folates). The formula is further enhanced by the addition of the essential fatty acid GLA (from borage oil), CurcuVET® (curcumin-phosphatidylcholine complex) for hepatic support, methionine for liver detoxification, and mixed flavonoids for extra antioxidant activity, connective tissue stabilization, and immune system support.
Older cats have an increased need for extra supplementation. As aging progresses there are a greater number of degenerating tissues. The addition of protein (whey protein) and specific amino acids can help geriatric patients by enhancing cardiac support (taurine) and gastrointestinal support (L-glutamine).
The feline aging process adversely affects the brain, a result of the decreased production of neurotransmitters, decreased synaptic density, and degeneration of neuronal membrane integrity. Phosphatidylserine positively affects neuronal membranes through support of the lipid membrane components and improves the amount and function of acetylcholine, norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine. Acetyl-L-carnitine supplementation results in increases in the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Bilberry has been added for its beneficial effects on vision. Because aging animals are more susceptible to the detrimental effects of stress, the adrenal adaptogenic herbs Eleutherococcus and ashwagandha have been added to help modulate these effects.
Note: Geriatric patients may have a variety of problems that are relatively specific to the individual. In most situations, Feline Basics can be easily combined with other formulas, such as Hepagen-Fc, Arthroplex, Gastriplex, or MemoractivVET.
