Like L-carnitine, coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is necessary for proper heart function. CoQ10 is a vital component of energy production within the mitochondria of the myocardial cells in the heart, and an adequate supply is vital to the health of the heart muscle. CoQ10 supports normal heart rhythm and can help maintain healthy blood pressure. CoQ10 is also an important antioxidant that protects the cells that line the blood vessels from oxidative damage.
In a human study, type 2 diabetics, who commonly exhibit poor arterial compliance, were given 200 mg of CoQ10 daily. Results demonstrated improved function of the endothelium lining the arteries.
