Breast Cancer Awareness - Part 1
October is breast cancer awareness month and breast cancer is on the rise. The American Cancer Society estimated that the number of women diagnosed increased from 175,000 in 1999 to 261,100 in 2010. Breast cancer affects one in eight women. It can be a highly curable disease if detected and treated early.
One of the reasons for this increase is due to the rise in environmental estrogens found in our food, water, air, household products, and plastics. Phytoestrogens, one type of environmental estrogen, are derived from plants. They mimic estrogen in the body, but because it comes from a plant, its effect is different. Soy, flax, and bio-identical products contain phytoestrogens.
There are many factors that may be attributed to this increase in breast cancer cases:
Iodine consumption is decreased (iodine was replaced with bromide known as a halogen in our baked goods).
Decrease in salt consumption due to concerns over sodium related to hypertension.
Decrease in egg consumption due to concerns over high cholesterol.
Decrease in fish consumption due to concerns over mercury levels.
Soil depletion: minerals decreased by accelerated deforestation and soil erosion. So we just aren't getting enough in our diet alone.
The two single most important things you can supplement for cancer prevention and breast health are:
Liquid Iodine - 5-20 drops twice daily (see supplement below)
Iodizyme-HP - 1/2 tablet daily working up to 1 full tablet (see supplement below)
Bio-D Mulsion Forte - 3 drops daily (see supplement below)
If the patient has fibrocystic breast disease also consider adding:
Intenzyme Forte (see supplement below) - 2 tablets daily on an empty stomach
Breast Cancer Awareness - Part 2
How does estrogen have an affect on breast health and hormone balance If estrogen becomes dominate in the system, it creates a hormonal imbalance. This imbalance is often seen as symptoms of PMS and menopause, along with an increased risk of breast cancer. Estrogens as well as phytoestrogens cause breast cells to grow rapidly, so if there is a cancer cell present; it has the potential to grow rapidly as well.
Breast tenderness can be a sign that the liver is not keeping up with conjugating all the excess estrogen during the menstrual cycle or perhaps the colon isn't clearing properly, causing a back up for the liver. Studies have shown the minimum amount of iodine to protect the breast from fibrocystic breast disease and cancer is 20-40 times more than is needed to prevent goiters. In other words, breast tissue needs 3-4 mg per day to be healthy. (Ghent, W. Iodine replacement in fibrocystic disease of the breast. Can. J. Surg. 36:453-460, 1993)
In a study published in Alternative Therapies in March 2009, thirteen women with an increased breast cancer risk, as noted by a low ratio of 2/16 hydroxyestrogen, were given 3.6 grams of Brussels sprouts and kale extracts for 90 days. After 90 days the average change in the 2/16 ratio was 168% (the range of the percent of change in 2/16 ratio for 20% was 843%!).. Eleven of the thirteen study subjects, or 85%, showed positive increases in their 2/16 ratios.
